What is Moving Insurance?
Moving companies are required to carry a few different types of moving insurance, including cargo insurance. Cargo insurance is the coverage that applies to your belongings. Not surprisingly, moving companies don't like to file claims against their policy if damage occurs; however, they still do have the coverage for your items. Instead of utilizing their own policy for damages, they typically offer an option to be compensated for any loss or damage to your goods while in transit. This is not an insurance product regulated by law, rather coverage for accepting a degree of liability in return for a payment. It is usually referred to as "valuation." This is often confusing and sometimes misrepresented by moving companies as moving insurance. Only insurance companies sell moving insurance. Much can be done to prevent loss or damage, and the first and foremost important element is your relationship with your moving company. Like all service businesses, the execution and professionalism of a company range from excellent to incredibly poor. At worst, a moving company is required to accept only some degree of liability. At best, the company will do everything possible to fully compensate you for any damages and protect their reputation. The basic, standard protection is 60 cents per pound (per article). For example, if damage or loss occurs to an item weighing 10 pounds, then the carrier's (movers) liability is $ 0.60 X 10lbs = $ 6.00. This is fine for items that are cheap and heavy, but certainly not acceptable for your amazing high definition flat screen television weighing 20 pounds. This option referred to as "basic coverage" or "no insurance" shouldn’t cost anything since it’s the bare minimum coverage. Always check with your renters or homeowners policy to see if they cover your relocation. As with any contract, it is important to read and understand what you’re signing with the moving company. For example, it’s common for the movers to nullify your insurance compensation if you do the packing. It is a fair practice. A mover and its moving insurance company cannot provide insurance on contents of boxes that they have never seen. They also don't know if the contents were packed properly. As a result, if you pack it, you take the risk. There are companies who will negotiate on this issue, but the general rule is, if you pack it (or unpack it) you nullify any insurance coverage.
Phone Estimates: It is important to be as accurate as possible when providing an Item List. Your Estimate is based on the item List that you provide. We use this Item List to determine how many men and hours your job will require. This helps us scheduling and enables us to give you an accurate Estimate. The Estimate is based on your home being packed and ready to move. Adding a significant number of items to your move after you have given us an Item List will increase the time required for your move, thus, the Cost for your move will increase. Cancellations/Rescheduling: If cancellation occurs within 48-hours of the confirmed moving date, there is a cancellation fee of $100 in addition to the $25 processing fee that was collected to reserve your move. Inclement Weather: Additional costs may be incurred due to staging difficulties caused by inclement weather. We will make the strongest possible efforts to keep clients items undamaged by said weather but cannot make any guarantees. The crew can assist with snow and ice removal at additional cost. Pressed wood/Pressboard: Any furniture made of this material will have very limited to no value as far as liability of the company. Maya’s Movers will not disassemble or reassemble furniture made of this material. Should you choose to disassemble your furniture, we will move the pieces and will not reassemble upon delivery. Under no circumstances will Maya’s Movers be involved in such tasks. Washers that are front loaders have locks to secure the drum during the move. The Maya’s Movers can install and remove these locks, but you must provide these locks for the crew to move the washer in a safe manner (these locks usually come with the washer when purchased.) Maya’s Movers will not be held liable for any internal damage to any electrical or electronic equipment (which may be a loose wire, blown fuse, etc.) Released Valuation Coverage: Maya’s Movers provides Released Valuation Coverage on all moves. This is federally mandated default coverage of $0.60 per pound damage payout. It is not value based and has exclusions that are listed below. What is Not Covered: Exclusions: Understanding the exclusions list will help you prepare better for your move. In addition to the list, we have also provided additional information for each item to help you understand why the items are excluded. • Any items that were packed by the customer and not by our movers cannot be covered. We cannot be sure how the box, crate or bin was packed and if it was packed correctly. Further, many boxes are used several times and their structure may not be adequate to prevent damage. • Any furniture items when no furniture pads are used for protection (based on customer refusal). Hiring professional movers is only half the battle. Furniture pads are extremely important in ensuring that your items are packed safely for transport. • Special care items, including glass tops and mirrors or high value items without proper packing and preparation. The best examples are plasma and LCD TV’s. These items must be packed in original boxes before shipment. We will not move special care items without packing or crating properly. • Clay Pots will not be covered under any circumstances. Released Valuation Coverage is provided on all items dropped or damages on site while in the possession of our movers, assuming they do not meet any of the exclusions above.
